If you follow this blog, you probably already know that distracted driving, specifically texting and driving, is a major cause of car accidents. Unfortunately, many New York residents text while they are behind the wheel. Recently, texting was a cause in one car accident, which seriously injured two individuals last fall. However, in this story, fingers were pointed at not only the driver, but the person who sent the text from a remote location.
A couple was hurt when a car driven by a 19-year-old man struck their motorcycle in Morris County. The injuries were so harsh that one of the victims had to have her leg completely amputated. The other victim had one of his legs ripped off during the frightening incident.

With evolving technology presenting the major issue of distracted driving, one would expect crash statistics to increase. However, did you know that traffic fatalities in the United States for 2011 were probably the lowest yearly total on record? New York residents will be happy to learn that car accidents are down almost 2 percent from 2010. Records have been documented since 1949.
Specifically, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has released a preliminary report that estimates that 32,310 people died on the country's highways last year. That number is lower than the 32,885 deaths reported in 2010.

A six-lane stretch of the 87-year-old Bronx River Parkway has proved to be dangerous. In fact, the parkway section is considered one of the least safe roads in New York.
AAA of New York City said the state's poor safety ranking for the parkway was confirmed after a horrendous car accident, which killed seven members of a Bronx family. The recent fatal accident was the second one of its kind in the past year.

As New York readers know, this blog has spent a great deal of time exploring the dangers associated with distracted driving. However, did you know that a new study suggests that two million car accidents annually are the result of the misuse of turn signals?
According to research from the Society of Automotive Engineers, drivers neglect to use their signals when changing lanes or fail to turn them off 48 percent of the time. Furthermore, the failure rate for making a turn is around 25 percent. Therefore, if you do the math, drivers fail to use signals two billion times a day.

As New York residents know, distracted driving has been a major topic in car crash prevention. Multiple studies suggest that the risk of a car accident increases dramatically when a motorist texts or talks on the phone while driving. However, did you know that new research suggests that you do not even need to be handling a device or chatting on your mobile device to be distracted? Reports say that just thinking about receiving a call or message is enough to take your mind off of the road.
In a study out of the University of Washington, undergraduate students were asked to take a standardized survey indicating their level of cell phone attachment. When compared with the participants' driving records, researchers found a significant relationship between attachment to mobile devices and motor vehicle accidents.

Did you know that crashes in which drivers mistakenly hit the gas instead of the brake tend to involve older female drivers in parking lots? A recent study from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that nearly two-thirds of drivers that have been in these types of accidents are female. However, when looking at all motor vehicle wrecks, the study found that 60 percent of drivers involved in car accidents are male.
These gas pedal accidents started to gain a bad reputation approximately 10 years ago. New York City residents probably remember hearing about that case where an 86-year-old male driver stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake and plowed into a market. Ten people were killed and 63 injured in this incident. Since then, crash researchers have focused on this problem.

With spring in blossom, it means it's time for motorcycle season. In the past month or so, many New York bikers and others across the nation have pulled their motorcycles out of hibernation. However, a recent story reports that with more bikes on the road, this might mean more motorcycle accidents.
Data from the Federal Highway Administration shows that there were eight million motorcycles on U.S. roads in 2009. In 2010, U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration confirmed that 4,502 people died and 82,000 motorcyclists were injured in motorcycle collisions.

In recent news, a 19-year-old woman was ejected from her pick-up truck and transported to the hospital for injuries following a rollover accident in the 5500 block of Eureka Drive. Sources say that the woman was driving her 2005 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck west of Roever Road. Reports indicate that the collision ensued when she attempted to change lanes to pass a 2007 Pontiac Trans Am.
In many crashes, authorities conduct an investigation and create an official car accident report. Such report can help injured individuals assess the reasons for a collision. Accidents happen so fast, and sometimes it is difficult to understand what occurred.
